Is it possible to change the layout of the routes component to be displayed on the left hand side (ex: side navigation) without causing errors to the ABP generated components?
If so, what's the best way to go about it?

are you talking about the open-source templates?

We have implemented Top-menu if you are using ABP Commercial. It will be released soon. But if you are using the free template, Lepton-X Lite has no top-menu option. Maybe you should use theme-shared instead of "Lepton-X Lite."
